Events in 2018

December 2018

Christmas market meet-up
With the Society’s third full year drawing to a close, join us for an informal mid-week gathering in the second week of December at the Eppendorfer Weihnachtsmarkt on Marie-Jonas-Platz for mulled wine, fried snacks dredged in sugar, and the sound of (recorded) sleighbells ringing. Sign-up using the app for date and precise details.

November 2018

Black-tie dinner
With two highly successful formal dinners at the Anglo-German Club under our belt, we will be continuing what is now a tradition with the Third Annual Dinner of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hamburg on 3rd November. The evening’s guest speaker is German public service broadcasting’s “woman in London” Annette Dittert, ARD senior foreign correspondent, who will be offering an entertaining and informative talk on the subject of Britain, Brexit, and house boats.

Violin concert
Our treasurer Andreas will be hosting young violinist Dmytro Udovychenko in his home and has kindly extended an exclusive invitation to members of the Society. Dmytro recently won second prize at the international Joseph-Joachim Violinist Competition in Hannover and will be offering a range of music on Friday, 16th November. Members of the Society please contact the Committee by e-mail to register.

October 2018

Author reading with Anselm Rodenhausen
Dr. Anselm Rodenhausen is a writer and lawyer who has advised international tech-companies and is now working for the European Commission in Brussels on digital policy files (AI, Blockchain, online platform regulation). He is also a writer who has produced a gripping thriller called Zernetzt about a new kind of social network with a dark secret from which he will be reading to us on 21st October. Use the events app to sign up.

September 2018

Information evening for freshers
Live in northern Germany and got a place at Oxford or Cambridge starting this autumn? Join us from 6pm on Friday 7th September and ask all those questions that we wish somebody would have been able to answer when we were getting ready to go. Just contact us to find out about where we be holding the event and what to expect.

July 2018

Summer Garden Party
Following the success of the last two, we will be holding our third Summer Garden Party at the Anglo-German Club from 6pm onwards on 6th July; we are delighted to once again be joining forces with the Harvard Club Hamburg for this year’s edition. Invitations to follow by group e-mail.

June 2018

Museum tour
This tour of the Museum für Völkerkunde takes a critical look at how ethnographic museums of this kind began operating and the assumptions on which they based their activities; it also explains how the museum is now engaging with the descendents of groups who were the subject of colonial-era interest. This weekday after-work event is scheduled for Thursday, 14th June. Use the events app to book.

April 2018

Spring Dinner
It’s time for another one of our classic, formal-hall-style dinners at the Anglo-German Club on 11th April. Space is limited, so respond to the e-mail invitation early to avoid disappointment.

March 2018

Boat Race Event
For the second year running, a Hamburg-based alumni with an extremely large television screen has kindly agreed to host us for an afternoon/evening of good-natured inter-University abuse based on the performance of 18 current students on the Thames on 24th March. Details on request by e-mail.

February 2018

Grünkohlwanderung
After last year’s successful event in this north German tradition, we’ll be meeting for more buccholic strolling, steaming kale, and back-straightening schnaps this February. Sign up for precise details about location and time.

January 2018

Sunday brunch
Join us for a relaxed Sunday brunch at Café Borchers in Eppendorf, a popular destination for a late breakfast/early lunch near the university hospital and within post-prandial walking distance of the Alster.  Details about reservation by e-mail or using the app.
