Annual Garden Party

As a cherished annual tradition, the Oxbridge Society of Hamburg celebrated the summer of 2024 on June 15th 2024. in grand fashion with its Summer Garden Party. This delightful event, held at the prestigious Anglo-German Club, brought together members of the Oxbridge Society and the Harvard Club for an unforgettable afternoon.

The event kicked off with croquet on the immaculate lawns, setting a perfect tone of leisurely elegance. The guests enjoyed the excellent service provided by the club, which ensured that every need was met with grace and efficiency. The highlight of the gathering was the short speech delivered by our president Wilfried Becker. True to his word, he reiterated the importance of brevity in speeches, making a succinct yet impactful address that resonated with all attendees.

Amidst the engaging conversations and laughter, members shared stories and exchanged ideas, rekindling old friendships and forging new connections. The Anglo-German Club’s charming atmosphere, combined with the diverse and vibrant crowd, made for a memorable celebration of Oxbridge tradition.

April 2024

Boat Race

The Oxbridge Boat Race was transmitted “en directe” from the river Thames on Saturday 30 March 2024 at Norddeutscher Regatta Verein, Schöne Aussicht 37, 22085 Hamburg 15.00 to 18.00 hrs. The „Kaffee und Kuchen“ buffet and Sandwiches were served between the women’s and the men’s race.

“Cambridge, by 10 lenghts” was the winning bet – For this year’s Oxbridge Boat Race, President and Cambridge contact Wilfried Becker welcomed more than 30 members and their families for a private screening at the suitably aquatic Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV), a
sailing club on the Alster.

The Oxford womens’ boat had a formidable start but, in the end, Cambridge won (as usual) – a pattern which was, as it turned out, equally pronounced in the men’s race. The Society’s resident rowing expert, Christian Baierle, was on hand to offer running commentary and, in the
interval between the races, organize a betting competition on the result of the mens’ race, with a bottle of Pimms up for grabs (Many thanks, Christian!).

Arno Baecker won the prize – and generously shared it with all who attended the event. Special thanks also go to our Past President and Oxford Contact, Brian Melican, who applied his technical wizzardry to link the River Thames with the Alster and get the race up on the NRV’s big screen.

Members for Members Lecture

StartUp Down – Lessons (to be learned)

Our event “Start Up Down – Lessons to be learned”, on April 19th at 12.30pm to 2pm, at the Al Lido in Hamburg was very enjoyable. Our member Hannes Schmidt hosted a working lunch as part of its new “By the Members for the Members” event series.

The event, titled “StartUp Down – Lessons (to be) Learned,” featured Hannes Schmidt of Jesus College, Cambridge. Held at Al Lido in the HafenCity, around 10 members and their guests gathered for an engaging discussion led by Hannes. Following a short introduction given by Wilfried Becker, Hannes shared his valuable experience in founding and closing a startup, offering first-hand insights into the challenges of entrepreneurship. Attendees enjoyed a relaxed setting, while networking and learning from Hannes’ journey. This intimate event provided an excellent opportunity to connect and exchange ideas over a delicious meal. It was a memorable and enriching experience for all who attended!
